When that happens, engage with the cav and maneuver to fire some javelins in the enemy flanker's backs. The cav are only really there to deal with enemy attempts to flank you. Your skirmishers should hang back at the start though with your cav (mounted warbands are fine). Finally your skirmishers are there to shoot targets of opportunity, give a bit more teeth to any units in trouble. They're meant for throwing into a melee that's already started with your hearthguard, similar to shock cavalry but without the repeated withdrawing and re-engaging. Axe warriors are devastating, but shouldn't fight 1 on 1. Stick something like Hearthguard in the front, keeping them spaced apart, with axe warriors in the second row. Instead, have 2 lines of melee infantry with a few skirmishers in a third line, spread out with big gaps between. There's not really anything behind them worth protecting. If it's all a bit expensive and you don't fancy royal households or bust, one thing to remember is that with Saxon ranged troops being such garbage, you don't really need a solid infantry front line, infact it's kinda to your disadvantage to do so. Battles are over fast, 8 heroic cavalry slamming into the back of the enemy infantry line while they're pinned against your infantry will end things very quickly. Saxon ranged troops do indeed suck, so I like to bring a large heroic cav contingent to ride round, drive off/destroy enemy skirmishers before slamming into the back of the enemy army. Heroic cavalry are excellent and will provide your cavalry needs. It's an expensive army, but Chosen warriors in the centre with nordic spear masters on your flanks will cut through anything, and give both scare and encourage buffs. Just rush royal households from the civic tree and build a Hall of Elders for a really strong early army. Great thing about the Saxons is you can ignore their military tech tree entirely. I expect that my non-garrison armies will end up with ~2 cav, ~2-3 skirm, ~2-3 mid-strength spears, and the rest melee troops of varying cost. What about down the line? Any suggestions for what strong army comps ought to be looking like later in the game? I'm already seeing a trend towards infantry. (Nordic Brigades are serving well in a cheap, expendable first-wave role looks like the later Nordic Warriors are going to be a massive shift in the units' role.) I'm leaning towards the Axe Warband for the fear effect, though I can see the value of mixing in Hearth Guard (for economic reasons). Right now, the main trouble I have is deciding between Hearth Guard and Nordic Axe Warband to use as the heart of my army. Which brings us to the front line - which also seems to be where Saxons excel. Which should I go for? Or should I ignore both and stack up on extra Saxon Lancers? I notice that the Nordic Mounted Raiders get retrains up to Horse Lords however, the Saxon Mounted Warband just seems better for now. They also don't seem to have very strong cav. Should these become the mainstay of my ranged combat? If so, are Geoguth Skirmishers worth the extra 125 recruitment and 20 upkeep cost? That said, the javelins are absolutely devastating, and my Nordic Skirmishers consistently rack up 100+ kills. The Nordic bows are pretty terrible, and the jav-armed troops have no range. So I'm trying to decide, what troops I ought to use for which purposes? I finally have access to a bit of troop variety. So I'm juuust hitting the midgame in my Saxon campaign (Frisia and Belgica firmly in hand, a strong foothold in England with three settlements, some expansion into Gothiscanza).
